Early Years in the Pre Prep
The youngest pupils at Sompting Abbotts join the Early Years Foundation Stage. Teachers follow the statutory framework to deliver an exciting play-based curriculum with a balance of child and teacher initiated activities.
In our Nursery (PP1) children aged 2 – 4 years love learning and developing their knowledge through engaging activities and play. When they are ready, they take their first steps in learning to read and write. They are introduced to phonics, reading, developing number and topic-based learning. The classroom provides a stimulating area for dressing up, water and sand play, painting, reading and creativity.
Flexible attendance arrangements are made to suit your family. We are a registered provider of the free entitlement for 2, 3 and 4 year olds. “Wrap Around” care is available throughout the school. For Early Years and PrePrep pupils, the Old Stables is staffed from 8am to 4.30pm.
Well trained staff liaise closely across the EYFS. They plan together and tailor the curriculum to the needs of individual children. This ensures a seamless transition into the Reception class (PP2) where the children begin full-time school and the curriculum becomes more structured. There are regular numeracy and literacy lessons alongside stimulating topic work and child-initiated play.
All EYFS pupils make the most of the ‘Walled Garden’ as their outdoor area. Extensive climbing apparatus, wheeled toys, sandpit and playhouse ensure that imaginations are fuelled and physical play can be safe but adventurous. The beautiful school grounds provide woodland, a pond area and field walks as perfect settings for outdoor learning experiences.
The curriculum is also enriched by visits, visitors, artists and performers.
