I’ve taught PE to both girls and boys in numerous schools over the years, both prep and secondary. I have been Head of Girls’ PE in four schools, including Kensington Prep School (GDST) for 11 years, and most recently I taught PE and games at Putney High (GDST) and Latymer Prep in London.

Can you tell us where you trained and about your career to date?

I’ve been a PE teacher ever since 1996 – nearly 30 years, including my training. I’ve never had or wanted any other career as I love teaching sport. I have just moved to Littlehampton from Putney in London. Originally, I am from Chelmsford, Essex, but after sixth form I moved to Devon in 1992 where I trained at St Luke's School of Education, Exeter University. I have a BAEd Honours Degree in PE.

My family are very sporty. My partner and baby son Eddie are very active! That's why we have moved from London to be by the sea and the South Downs. I want my son to grow up playing sport and being outdoors.

What drew you to become a teacher and what it is you enjoy most about teaching sports?

I always wanted to be a PE teacher! When I was in school, I told my PE teacher that was what I wanted to do and I asked her to write me a list of how to be a PE teacher. I wanted the clipboard and the whistle and a profession where I could be outside, playing sport, having fun, not stuck at a desk indoors!

What kind of positive character traits and values do you feel children absorb through learning sports?

They are many but definitely teamwork, resilience and the value of practice. Most importantly, that it's not always about winning but about the taking part and accepting outcomes.

How much difference do you think sports can make to children’s lives and careers ahead and why?

I’d say it makes a huge amount of difference. Sport gives us all a fun outlet for stress. It is something to enjoy with friends beyond the academics. Teaching children to gain a love for sports will mean they’ll likely continue with them into adulthood to be fit and healthy for life.

What tactics do you use to help as a sports teacher?

I care deeply about all the pupils I teach, regardless of their sporting aptitude. I think all pupils, whatever their gender or ability, should have access to all sports. As a girls’ games specialist, I’m very keen to involve them all, differentiate my lessons according to ability, and ensure all lessons are fun whilst the pupils achieve. I want the girls to be able to play football and rugby too.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

I’m a huge rugby fan! I used to play women’s rugby for years. I was a winger (11) and I played, county, regional and had England trials when I was younger and played in an England A match. I also love to paint!

What appealed to you about working at Sompting Abbotts?

The school is warm, friendly and caring and it looked beautiful with splendid views of the sea and an outdoor pool! For me, this role is a wonderful opportunity to use my passion for sports and my skills and experience.

Please tell us about your hobbies and passions.

I love all sports! Currently I cycle, swim, play squash and I am hoping to get better and better at golf! I also currently coach netball for Spencer Netball Club who compete in the Surrey Junior Netball League.
