Conkers and golden moments: an autumnal tradition at Sompting Abbotts

What child doesn’t love to collect handfuls of glossy brown conkers? At Sompting Abbotts, they don't just fill their pockets — even socks become makeshift pouches. And so, at this time of the year, we send the children out into our school grounds to look for shiny conkers (not that they need any persuading).

Sompting Abbotts named finalist in Independent Schools of the Year 2023 Environmental Achievement Award

Following our earlier announcement in July of the shortlisted entries for the Independent Schools of the Year 2023 awards, we're delighted Sompting Abbotts Preparatory School has been selected as a Finalist in the Independent School of the Year for Environmental Achievement category.

New Beginnings at Sompting Abbotts: Introducing Our New Headmaster

Sompting Abbotts warmly welcomes Mr Chris Gunn as Headmaster, taking the mantle from Mr Stuart Douch who served from 2013-2023. We're grateful that Mr Douch will continue to enrich our community as Head of English and History. We extend our heartfelt gratitude for his excellent past leadership.

Our Environmental Ethos: Outdoor Classrooms and Woodland Coronations

At Sompting Abbotts, we adopt a school-wide ethos that embodies our commitment to the environment. Its principles – 'Embrace Nature; Embrace Learning; Embrace Childhood' – are threaded through our teaching, influencing every child's journey from Pre-Prep to Upper Prep. Our 30-acre grounds and woodland in the South Downs National Park are at its roots.

Sompting Abbotts launches annual Speech Cup of Poetry and Performance

Sompting Abbotts’ annual Speech Cup of Poetry and Performance saw every child from Years 3 - 8 learn and recite a poem by heart! The best performances were chosen at a special competition in front of an audience of their peers and their parents. It was judged by an external expert adjudicator.

Lab detectives: owl pellet dissection and analysis

Pupils have been working as dissection detectives in the science lab at Sompting Abbotts Prep School. They have been investigating Barn Owl pellets found in the school grounds.

All our Main School children deserve a well-earned rest this holiday with the last week of term being jam-packed with their many rehearsals and performances of the school's brilliant production of the musical Roald Dahl's "Matilda the Musical, Jr." Well done to everyone who took part – and of course to the many staff and parents who made it possible too – and above all to its director Mrs Turton, music maestro Mrs Williamson and stage designer Mrs Tewkesbury. Today Sompting Abbotts' Pre-Prep were treated to their very own performance of Roald Dahl's "Matilda the Musical, Jr." which Years 3 - 8 have been rehearsing so hard for with Mrs Turton over the past term. What a lovely Afternoon Concert we had today, involving every child at Sompting Abbotts Preparatory School for Girls and Boys who is learning an instrument, right from our Pre-Prep to our Prep - piano, violin, cello, trumpet, clarinet, flute, vocals and more! This week, our pupils and parents made a trip to Ferring Country Centre to deliver a cheque for £1,048! This brilliant amount was just part of that raised through our Worthing Pier to Brighton Pier walk last November. The visit gave our children a chance to see the real difference their fundraising efforts will make. The day was filled with learning and fun – including tours of the farm and riding school, and some well-deserved time at the playground, all thanks to their hard work during the walk. Headmaster Chris Gunn said: "Despite challenging weather (think high winds and rain!), our students, parents and teachers demonstrated great determination and positivity on the walk. It's experiences like these that really show the character of Sompting Abbotts pupils." Reaching Brighton Palace Pier marked a significant achievement for all involved and these funds will help with animal care, farm maintenance, and resources for the learning centre and riding school at Ferring Country Centre. Headmaster Chris Gunn added: “We chose these charities as they are particularly important to our Principal Mrs Sinclair and Bursar David Sinclair. Their ongoing support emphasises our commitment to impactful contributions in our local area. Ferring Country Centre is a great charity, providing valuable experiences for people with learning disabilities.” We're looking forward to our next visit to Chestnut Tree House, which is the other recipient of our sponsored walk funds on February 20th, to continue our community support.
