"Different but brilliant!": Sports Day 2021

Our children had lots of fun at their Sports Day this year as you can see in the video!

We were sorry restrictions meant we could not have parents in attendance for what is usually a social highlight of Sompting Abbotts year.

But here, at least, is a whirlwind video record of what was a lovely event.

For the Pre-Prep, it involved lots of traditional favourite races such as the egg and spoon and sack races and some challenging and innovative ones like the Fishing Boat and Traffic Light races.

Mr Chris Gunn, Head of PE and Games said: “Everyone was a winner for taking part and they all took part with big smiles. This year’s Sports Day may have been different but it was still brilliant!”

Thank you to all the Pre-Prep staff for working so hard to organise it and a special mention to PP4 for doing such a good job helping with the equipment.

Here's a little trip down memory lane to the event 36 years ago on a still and hot June day in 1985, (when hats – still welcome! – were very much 'de rigueur'! This photo shows our Principal Mrs Patricia Sinclair (wearing hat and pale blue dress) standing before the boys (at this time the school was a boys' school) with her husband, the late Mr Nigel Sinclair, and Mr Richard Johnson, who became Headmaster in 1993.Somewhere among the boys (sitting in the sun on their red blazers, wearing the same white shorts white polo shirts as today) will have been our current Headmaster, Mr Stuart Douch, who was a pupil at the time! If you're interested to learn more about the school's history and the people instrumental in it, you might enjoy this article on the school website.

Main School Sports Day was a little different this year with the requirement to keep our class bubbles but was a lovely event nonetheless for the children – and the sun shone for us! Here's a glimpse of the action. There is a snippet of all of the 20 races (except for the two relays - less easy to translate to film!). Many thanks to the staff - especially Mr Gunn and Ms Farley – who put so much work into organising (and sanitising!) equipment, logistics and the line-up.
