This Is The Best Kind of Classroom!

Watch and listen to the children perform their beautiful reading of the poem This is the Best Kind of Classroom by poet Ian McMillan which reflects Sompting Abbotts’ strong focus on hands-on green learning.

Getting out into nature is something the children at Sompting Abbotts do every day – whether it’s for free play in the grounds and woods or for experiential forest-school-style lessons or for science, art or geography.

Children in Year 4 have recorded this lovely version of the wonderful poem 'This is the Best Kind of Classroom' by Yorkshire poet Ian McMillan. They did their reading in situ in the Top Woods!

The children, and the poem, have such an important message. It’s this. How can we leave our children a better world than the one we inherited? Teaching them to love nature is a great start.

Says Headmaster Stuart Douch: “With all the digital distractions of today, too many children are better at identifying Pokémon and Minecraft characters than their local wildlife. There has to be a better balance between screen time and wild time.”

At Sompting Abbotts, we believe that if children lose contact with the natural world, they won't fight for it. They have to experience it to learn that it's worth saving. That's why, learning about nature, sustainability and climate change, is part of everyday life at Sompting Abbotts. Click the button below to learn more.
